Mostly handled byCMO’s (Contract Manufacturing Organisations), thehealthcare CMO market is booming rapidly, and isanticipated to show a CAGR of 14.3% leading up to 2019.This has led to many major pharmaceutical firms making thechoice to utilise CMO’s for 100% of their productioncapabilities, greatly reducing staff costs and otheroverheads. When it comes to the CMO industry, major players are theUS and Europe, who have a large number of healthcareCMO’s within their territory. Germany, Italy and the UK areparticularly active in the EU – with Germany having a clearlead in terms of the sheer number of CMOs that specialisein the pharmaceutical industry. The story is much the same in the rest of the world. In2012 the global pharma CMO market stood at an estimated$97 billion, while figures suggest that by 2019, this will haveballooned to an incredible $246 billion. This is expected tobe a compound factor of pharma giants making increaseduse of CMO’s. But the figure is also strengthened by theending of a number of patents which will likely see a flurryof suppliers seeking to provide now un-patented drugs atmuch lower rates. The advantages of contract manufacturing, or outsourcingin general, extend beyond the variable costs ofmanufacturing and into overheads in staff, maintenance andeven property. No manufacturing means no factory, savingspace and rental costs. Of course, becoming fully reliant onoutsourced manufacturing comes with its own issues, namely that of flexibility and dependency, but so long as acompany does not put all their eggs in one basket, this riskis mitigated. With how fast the manufacturing industry moves, it istempting to place the burden of keeping up on another. While it will never be as profitable in simple terms tooutsource – the contract manufacturer has to make a profitsomewhere, after all – pharma companies can invest themoney they would have spent on capital, investment andmaintaining a facility, into R&D instead, investing in thecreation of new drugs that might keep them more profitablein the future. As such, while the approach is not inherently as profitablein itself, it can be more sustainable in the long run. 28-31.qxp_Layout 1 04/12/2018 15:11 Page 4Saturday 12 – Monday 14January 2019International Conference onPharma Sciences andBiotechnology (ICPSB 2019)Langkawi, Malaysia The third ICPSB aims to provide a forum forresearchers, practitioners and professionalsfrom the industry, academia and governmentto discuss research and development andprofessional practice in pharma sciences andbiotechnology.
